Are there any community colleges in Omaha area that do pro bono body work on cars for class credit?
My wife's car is totalled, except for it has really low miles and runs great. The right side got smashed in last week, and the other driver did NOT get a ticket (so much for insurance $$). We cannot afford a new car, honestly I almost think it's ridiculous myself to fix this one. BUT if it can be done, I would like to see options. It's a 1994 Pontiac Sunbird, about 68K miles.

Depends on how bad the damage is, if the interior has intruded into the cabin (door, b pillar etc) is pushed into the front seat the car is totalled if not you can repair the car with pannels from a 1990 - 1994 Cavalier / Sunbird, if the door can open examine the door frame carefully. Minor damage can be repaired with a hammer and dolly. A good junkyard can be one source for parts another source is CertiFit, who sells aftermarket pannels. If the car is totalled your second option is to find a Cavalier / Sunbird with a bad engine or transmission and swap your drivetrain into the car, you can also carry over your interior, headlights, tail lights etc a swap of engine/trans and interior can all be done in a weekend's worth of work.

Get a local Realtor. Matter of fact get a young new to the business Realtor. They will know where it is happening and their work will be looked over by the Broker.

Sounds like you are going from one extreme to another. If i were you I would consider taking up golf, join a golf club, or an outward bound club, hiking, extreme sports, whatever you really really enjoy so that you can meet likeminded people. This is a chance for you to learn other aspects of living, I don't know where Omaha is but if it is rural, you might learn something new about rural life, environment, home grown stuff, etc. Sounds like an exciting change. Anway, at 45 you might enjoy the slower pace, compared to a downtown situation... Sorry if this sounds rude, don't mean it to be, I wish you well and lots of fun n happiness.

Welcome to Omaha. I have been to Chicago a few times, and would rather live in Omaha, myself- but it is a somewhat different experience. There is a lot of housing in the downtown area, near the Old Market, that is quite cool, and new stuff going up in the North Downtown area (NoDo) near the Qwest Auditorium and where the new baseball stadium is going. Another good choice would be the western edge of the city, about 170th and Dodge or so, near the Village Pointe developments- the 'cutting edge' of the city. If you want a more 'neighborhood' feel, try - Aksarben/UNO/Elmwood park area- around 60th from Dodge to Center Streets - Dundee, around 60th and Cass area - Field Club, 38th and Woolworth areas - Keystone, between 72nd and 90th, Fort to Maple - Med Center/Mutual area- 40th to 60th around Farnam St. If you've got some bucks, try- - Fairacres, 60th to 72nd along Cass St. - Regency, south of the Westroads - Eagle Run or the areas around any of the big golf courses along the 120th to 160th stretch from about Fort to Center However, I'd bet that the local office you work for can help more than we can!

I just got home from a layover in Omaha (flight attendant) and I really enjoyed myself there. It is a BIG difference from the huge city of Chicago...but it is a very cute area. The area by Old Town has a bunch of cute little shops, nice restaurants, and the path along the river is just beautiful. The Qwest Center is just down the road from there, and they have a lot of concerts/events. It will most likely be a culture shock for a little while, but I'm sure you will adjust!!

I just recently learned how to drive in omaha. I am new to the place and still am navigating the streets. Do GPS work well here? What would you recommend (garmin, tomtom, magellan)? Some people say the omaha maps are not updated. I justw ant to know if it's worth my money to get one. Merci beau coup!

GPS's mainly work all over North America. Some are even worldwide. If you don't have a lot of money and you want a really good GPS, you can find a lot of good deals on online sites such as eBay. Dairy Queen is a great place for a young person to work. The labor is not strenuous and is worth the pay. If there is a location near you I suggest you look into it, they should be hiring soon as spring is approaching. I started there when i was sixteen and am now 18 and soon going to move away to college in a new city. The two years work experience i have will come in handy when applying for a new (possibly better) job. PS usually fast food stores are the only places willing to hire someone under 18

I was wondering what the typical work day is for cops in Omaha who work for OPD. I know there are different shifts but what times are they? Thanks.

I am not a OPD officer, but as a police officer (anywhere) you can expect to work any shift. Some officers work four ten hour days, while some officers work 5 eight hours days. You might be able to work m-f days when you have a lot of years seniority and.or are a detective. But, don't hold your breath.

I'm pretty sure that OPD runs 10 hour shifts with alternating days off. I'll call them later though and find out for sure so check back to see when I edit my answer.
